Biography:
Timothy Monger State Park is a band from Southeast Michigan fronted by namesake, singer, and guitarist Timothy Monger. Released in 2021, their debut EP, Knight Errand, is a luminous set of psych-layered power pop and folk-rock in the tradition of crafty melodicists like the New Pornographers and Robyn Hitchcock & the Egyptians.
Formed in 2010, just as Monger's longtime group Great Lakes Myth Society was entering a prolonged hiatus, State Park's initial role was primarily that of a live band, gigging around the state with an occasionally rotating staff of seasoned musicians culled from Southeast Michigan's vibrant indie scene. During its first decade members of bands like Starling Electric, Saturday Looks Good To Me, and Lightning Love all made their mark in the group with many of the players also contributing heavily to Monger's solo albums.
In the early-2020s, a new studio lineup solidified and recorded its first proper studio sessions under the State Park banner. Inspired by melodic indie rock, British folk-rock, and the softer sides of psychedelia, the band captured the three-song suite, Knight Errand, live to tape in a single afternoon. Issued as a musical/ephemeral collaboration with Philadelphia designer, Dan Shepelavy, Knight Errand was released in October 2021 by Northern Detective and Universal Exports of North America.
In 2023, this new generation of State Park made its live debut and began playing around Southeast Michigan in support of Monger’s fourth solo album. The current lineup includes members of Child Sleep, Tanager, and Bandeau.
