SONG NOTES:

I'm still enchanted by the idea of terrestrial radio. Music, media and information are so easily available nowadays that it's intriguing to still use a format that is susceptible to the weather, the time of day and distance from its source. As an avid listener of Detroit Tiger baseball broadcasts, I'm constantly battling poor reception over multiple stations on the AM band. I know of certain stoplights in Ann Arbor that are dead zones and when I'm caught at one of those lights, I find myself nudging the car forward or backward trying to get a clearer signal. Down in Lenawee County where I now live, the AM Tigers station fades almost completely when the sun goes down.

Before we had an internet connection at our farm I used to sit in my car in the driveway and listen until it faded out and then buy the Detroit Free Press from the gas station in the morning to find out the results of the game. "Radio Harvest" celebrates the validity of the car radio.

PRODUCTION NOTES:

All of the primary tracking for this song was done at Benjamin Ridley Jr.'s wonderful Windfall Recordings at the foot of Keuka Lake in beautiful Hammondsport, New York. In addition to engineering the track, Ben also played drums and tambourine.

The remaining overdubs were completed back in Ann Arbor by Geoff Michael at Big Sky Recording. I called on several of my friends during their lunchbreak at Shar Products to come down the street to the studio and do the elaborate handclap parts at the end. I wrote the string parts on a keyboard and taught them one by one by ear to my talented and patient string players. Although I am extremely happy with the results, I vowed that for the next album I would either hire an arranger or learn to write out the notation myself. - TM (April 2010)
